Pat Dougherty
With a sense of humor and sure instinct for color and design, Pat Dougherty paints her way into the heart of contemporary Americana. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dougherty currently makes her home in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge with her high school sweetheart. While widely known for her straightforward, upbeat style within the Folk Art tradition depicting ordinary people, familiar landscapes and commonplace events, Dougherty has more recently taken to experimenting with larger shapes, bolder colors and the modest people of West Kenya.
When asked about the transition in her work, Dougherty explains, "It's all about the creative journey. I started out drawing, got interested in color and found a nice niche in the folk art style. I enjoyed the detail and subject matter for many years. Recently, I started working with bigger shapes and bolder colors and took a personal interest in a small community in western Kenya. It seemed like a natural fit to marry the new subject material to the new style. Who knows where it will lead to years from now. That's why it's a journey."
Dougherty's work is represented in numerous distinguished private and public collections.
