Patricia Strobel
Patricia Strobel has a deep love for the land of her native Bedford County and works to express the reverence and respect she feels for Southwest Virginia through her painting. She seeks out untouched landscapes that still exist and strives to capture them before they are lost to housing developments and urban sprawl. While primarily self taught, she has participated in workshops in Roanoke and Stuttgart, Germany. Her works are in the collections of the Hotel Roanoke and the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Strobel works in a direct, alla prima style, working wet into wet to capture the effects of light as it sweeps over the landscape. Of her work, she writes, "I use paint straight from the tube, preferring the thick sensuous feel of it and the painterly strokes made as I push and pull the paint across the canvas. I consider myself a fairly literal painter, but detail is subordinated to color and design. I feel that a painting is successful when I have balanced the major shapes and have captured the truth of a scene as I first perceived it."
